Theoretical orientations that we draw upon were developed by Durkheim whose work on social integration and suicide are seminal and John Bowlby, a psychiatrist who developed attachment theory in relation to child development and contemporary social network theorists. We present a conceptual model of how social networks impact health. Émile Durkheim, considered one of the founders of modern sociology, had a lot to say about social integration. He was one of the first to explore the concept in a book called The Division of Labor social factors underlie suicide,and this is what keeps a group’s rate fairly constant year after year. Durkheim identified social integration,the degree to which people are tied to their social group, as a key social factor in suicide. He concluded that people who have weaker social ties are more likely to commit suicide. Durkheim found that while the act of committing suicide is an individual act, it is directly connected to the group and social life of the individual.
